[Tutorial] Creating a proxy for faster PSN downloads
[Tutorial] Creating a proxy for faster PSN downloads
Information
I have fast internet at home, 178 down/12 up, stable connection, and I use my own hardware, not the leased trash given by my ISP. Console is wired as well.
But I like many others have slow PSN speeds, and it takes a lot of time to download things that I can otherwise acquire much faster from other services (Steam, etc.)
Here is a quick tutorial on how to create a proxy server using a computer at home to improve your PSN download speeds:
Go to this website, and download SKFU Pr0xy. Choose the option to download from wololo.net as SKFU's direct link is down, hence why the current version (3.0.3) is not currently an option (you'll have version 3.0.)
Install SKFU Pr0xy.
Make sure the PC you are using and PS4 are connected via ethernet. If you have a mac, try a Wine wrapper, or a trial version of a virtual machine if you don't already have one.
Open the program and note the "Proxy Server IP" at the bottom. It will have an address, and a port. This is the address we will use later to connect the PS4 to the proxy.
Click the big button that looks like "Play".
On your PS4 go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Custom
Leave IP auto, Leave MTU auto. Select Use when asked about the Proxy.
Use the IP address and Port that SKFU Pr0xy displays next to "Proxy Server IP."
Complete the setup, and test the connection. All should go through properly.
If you had downloads going, restart them. Restarting your console could be a possibility here as well, though I have not had to do that.
When the DLs are done, go back to network settings and setup internet connection normally WITHOUT proxy. I had issues playing online if I left it with the proxy.
Hit the stop button on SKFU Pr0xy to turn it off.
Credit goes to u/BringiStrikes over in the PS4 sub. I included the DL link since SKFU's direct links aren't working currently.
Hopefully you'll see a buff to your DL speeds in comparison to before. I do this for both myself and my roommate when we need to download large content over PSN.
